Background on Irma McClaurin

Dr. Irma McClaurin is the founder of the Irma McClaurin Black Feminist Archive at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. She is an award-winning author, poet, activist, anthropologist, HipHop Mom and mentor, and CEO of Irma McClaurin Solutions. A woman of many talents, Dr. Irma is a past president of Shaw University and a former Program Officer for Education and Scholarship at the Ford Foundation. She was also the founding executive director of the University of Minnesota’s first Urban Research Outreach-Engagement Center, including a 21,000 sf renovation, and an Associate Vice President with tenure in the Anthropology Dept.

Dr. Irma was also the first Black faculty member to be tenured in anthropology through the ranks at the University of Florida, where she was an affiliate of African Studies, the Center for Latin American Studies, Afro-American Studies, and Women and Gender Studies. After serving as Deputy Provost at Fisk University, while on leave from UF, she became the inaugural Mott Distinguished Chair in Women’s Studies at Bennett College for Women. She founded its Africana Women’s Studies Program. Dr. Irma also was a Senior faculty and coach at the US government’s Federal Executive Institute and was Chief Diversity Officer at Teach For America.

An acclaimed Zora Neale Hurston scholar, she appears in the PBS documentary “Zora Neale Hurston: Claiming a Space.” Prior to becoming an anthropologist, Dr. McClaurin held numerous administrative positions. She was the first Assistant Director of Admissions for Minority Recruitment at Mt. Holyoke College (1975-1977 ck dates on offer letter) and wrote their first minority admissions brochure. In 1977, she joined the Office of Transfer Affairs in Student Affairs at her graduate alma mater UMass Amherst. She rose rapidly from Staff Assistant to Associate Director and developed and wrote multiple Admissions brochures, including the first minority recruitment brochure entitled “Strengthen Through Diversity” thst included a statement by Dr. Johnnetta B. Cole, serving as the first Associate Provost for Undergraduate Education. In 1983, McClaurin was hired in Academic Affairs as Assistant Dean in the College of Arts and Sciences and held an adjunct position in Women’s Studies. Dr. Irma has an MFA in English and an MA and PhD in Anthropology from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. In 2023, her alma mater, Grinnell College, awarded her the Honorary Doctorate of Social Studies.

This series contains materials related to Dr. Irma McClaurin’s book manuscript Incongruities: Dissonance and Contradictions in the Life of a Black Middle-Class Woman. The manuscript explores the life and suicide of Leanita McClain, a Black journalist and editor at the Chicago Tribune, who was the first Black person and second woman to serve on the Tribune's Editorial Board in 185 years. Leanita and McClaurin were high school classmates at the all girls Lucy Flower Vocational High School in Chicago. It was working on Leanita’s life history and suicide that led McClaurin to study the field of anthropology. The series includes drafts, research notes, correspondence, and a chapter based on Dr. McClaurin’s master’s thesis, which engages with feminist theory and its limitations in addressing the experiences of Black women.The thesis was published (under Irma McClaurin-Allen) as “Incongruities: Dissonance and Contradictions in the Life of a Black Middle-Class Woman” in Ginsburg and Tsing, eds. Uncertain Terms: Negotiating Gender in American Culture (Boston: Beacon Press, 1990). 

This series includes materials related to the publication of Black Feminist Anthropology: Theory, Politics, Praxis, and Poetics, edited by Dr. Irma McClaurin. Contents include manuscript drafts, contributor correspondence, editorial notes, and publication planning documents. The materials document the book’s development and Dr. McClaurin’s role as editor and contributor.
