Scope of collection
Assembled to bring together short and broken runs of periodicals produced by activists and movements for social justice Social Change Periodicals Collection touches on a wide variety of topics. Much of the original collection came from subscriptions held by the Everywoman's Center at UMass Amherst, however the collection has grown to include materials supplied by many other donors. The bulk of the periodicals dates from the period 1965-1990 covering subjects ranging from feminism to gay rights, and political radicalism, to peace, prison, labor, antiracism, and the counterculture more generally.
The collection has been organized thematically into 19 series. We anticipate that the collection will continue to grow as new materials are received.
Series descriptions
Periodicals focused on liberation struggles in Central America and opposition to U.S. imperialism, especially during the 1980s. Although most periodicals in this series were published in the United States, some were printed in Nicaragua, El Salvador, Mexico, and elsewhere.
Miscellaneous college press and student publications. Most student periodicals and newsletters from UMass Amherst are included in the University Archives.
Periodicals with a primary focus outside the United States or with an internationalist focus.
Newsletters and magazines associated with social change based in spiritual and religious traditions. Many other periodicals listed under other categories, especially peace, have strong connections to religious traditions.
