William J. Lederer began his long career in the Navy in 1930. During his twenty-eight years of service he traveled throughout Asia on some 30 trips, acquiring several books worth of experience, criticisms, and insight. In 1948, Lederer attended the Bread Loaf Writer's Conference in Vermont and met fellow author and political theorist Eugene Burdick. Disillusioned with the style and substance of America's diplomatic efforts in Southeast Asia, Lederer and Burdick openly sought to demonstrate their belief that American officials and civilians could make a substantial difference in Southeast Asian politics if they were willing to learn local languages, follow local customs and employ regional military tactics. Together they co-authored two widely influential books, The Ugly American (1958) and Sarkhan (1965).

The collection includes materials related to most of his major publications including, A Nation of Sheep, The Ugly American, Sarkhan, Our Own Worst Enemy, I, Giorghos, Mirages of Marriage, and Martial Choices. A substantial series of correspondence traces Lederer's associations and communications throughout his entire career. Area files, research materials, and photographs are also included.

An American author and Navy captain, William Julius Lederer, Jr. was born on March 31, 1912 in Manhattan, New York to dentist and occasional actor William Julius Lederer and Paula Franken. Lederer's mother died when he was 5, after which the family moved up the Hudson River to Ossining, New York. He completed one year at DeWitt Clinton High School before dropping out at the age of 16 and becoming assistant to New York journalist Heywood Broun. Under Broun's tutelage, Lederer was introduced to members of the Algonquin Round Table, including author Dorothy Parker and humorist Robert Benchley.

In 1930, Lederer enlisted in the Navy but was not permitted to matriculate in the Naval Academy because he lacked a high school education. Lederer, as he writes in his article and short story "Making Annapolis Was Easy," after two years as an enlisted man, won the right to take the entrance exam to the Naval Academy, which he passed. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis in 1936. Throughout the 1940s, Lederer divided his time between serving on a river gunboat in China and as a line officer in the Atlantic fleet during World War II. He was a ship's navigator in the Allied invasion of Sicily in 1943. Lederer received various honors for his service during the war, including a Purple Heart and a Commendation Ribbon for his role as executive officer of the destroyer Bristol that was torpedoed in the Mediterranean Sea.

Lederer's naval career lasted 28 years, taking him to many Asian nations on some 30 trips and providing him with several books worth of experience, criticisms, and insight. He began publishing articles in national magazines in 1947, and in February 1950 released All the Ships at Sea (Norton, 1950), a compilation of often-humorous accounts of his time in the Navy. Later that same year, while serving as Chief of the Magazine and Book Division, Office of Public Information, Department of Defense, Lederer published The Last Cruise (Sloane, 1950) about the sinking of the submarine U.S.S. Cochino during a polar gale north of the Arctic Circle, championing the American heroes and self-sacrificing men of the U.S. Navy.

In 1950, Lederer was awarded a year-long Nieman Fellowship from the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard University; Lederer lived in Cambridge during the extent of his fellowship.

During the later years of his naval career, while serving as a public information officer, Lederer worked first at the Pentagon, then in 1951, he was stationed at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii as special assistant to Admiral Felix Stump, Commander-in-Chief of the Pacific. Lederer maintained this assignment, promoted to the rank of Captain, until his retirement in 1958.

In 1958, the same year as his retirement from the Navy, Lederer became The Reader's Digest's Far East Correspondent, a position resulting in numerous articles and book publications. He held this position until 1963.

In 1948, Lederer attended the Bread Loaf Writer's Conference in Vermont and met fellow author and political theorist Eugene Burdick. Nearly a decade later the two men would collaboratively author The Ugly American (Norton, 1958), a fictionalized exposé designed to shine light on American policy in Asia and on the State Department's poorly trained overseas personnel who often lacked cultural awareness and knowledge of the local language. Due to the critical nature of The Ugly American, the book became surrounded by controversy and the two authors fast became well-known literary figures. The phrase "ugly American" has passed into common usage to describe the oblivious or arrogant American abroad. This book is often cited as the catalyst for the creation of the Peace Corps and the Army Language School. The book and its authors became even more successful with the release of the 1963 film adaptation starring Marlon Brando. Lederer and Burdick collaborated a second time on a follow-up novel Sarkhan (McGraw Hill, 1965), this time targeting American attempts to stop the spread of Communism in Asia.

From 1966 to 1967, Lederer was the writer-in-residence at the Kirkland House at Harvard University. He published additional books, including several more books about the Navy and foreign affairs, three books of advice about marriage, several children's books, a practical manual for writers, a how-to for beginner cross-country skiers, and numerous articles on a wide range of topics.

Lederer married Ethel Victoria Hackett in 1940 and they had three sons. The two divorced in 1965; later that year Lederer married Corrine Edwards Lewis, his co-publisher at the Honolulu Beacon, a monthly humor magazine. Lederer and Lewis divorced in 1976.

William Lederer died on December 5, 2010 at the age of 97 in Baltimore, Maryland.

Scope of collection

The papers of William J. Lederer, including personal and professional correspondence, photographs, area files, research materials, and manuscripts, document his 28-year service in the United States Navy and his career as an author of over 15 books and numerous articles. In particular, the collection sheds light on his editorial process. A meticulous writer and editor, Lederer frequently revised his works several times, even making significant changes late in the process, before publishing them.

Series descriptions

Consisting of the original typescripts and manuscripts of many of Lederer's books and articles, along with corrected and uncorrected galleys and correspondence with editors and publishers, this series exhibits Lederer's characteristic writing process. Other materials include evidence of Lederer's approach to researching and verifying content for his books and newsclippings of book reviews.

Lederer was a frequent contributor to The Reader's Digest and The Saturday Evening Post. Many of his published articles became compiled in collections of short stories or developed into chapters of books.

Lederer retained much of his incoming letters as well as many of his outgoing letters. As such there is a good representation of his communications in a variety of roles: Chief of the Magazine and Book Division, Office of Public Information in the U.S. Navy, Far East Correspondent at Reader's Digest, author, and public figure. He often received letters from the readers of his books, some complimentary and others critical. These letters are typically filed under the title of the book.

For both his writing career his naval career, Lederer did extensive research on many foreign countries and areas. The materials include article clippings, notes, travel journals, official reports, tourism literature, and letters. This collection is organized by country/region.

The line between Lederer's personal and professional life was blurry. His colleagues both in the navy and in the writing profession were also his friends. This series contains documents and items relating to Lederer's medical history, financial records, and sentimental items.

Lederer was in the Navy from 1930 until his retirement in 1958. He attended the Naval Academy and worked up the ranks, retiring as a Captain. His writing and Naval career overlapped greatly, especially when he was assigned duty as a correspondent. The Navy series includes official orders, memos, letters, certificates and other documents related to his service.

Lederer kept a robust collection of photographs from his travels and time in the Navy. Additionally, he used audiograph discs for verbal note taking. This series has not been fully processed but is contained in boxes 80 to 104.

I, Giorghos

Published in 1984, I, Giorghos tells the story of George Adamson, an American who flees the country to escape his problems and seeks renewal in Greece. Correspondence with editor Marian Johnson of W.W. Norton and Company offers unique insight into Lederer's internal authorial process. Lederer explains his literary intent and decision-making, as well as his protagonist's, and perhaps his own, writing process: "it is done with great gulps of breath, great speed, and the untidiness characteristic of the intuitive flow. Sometimes ...with uncertainty and painful hesitation."

Johannsen

Also referred to in the documents as "The Happiest Man in Canada" and "Grand Old Man of the North," this extended article describes a man named Herman Smith-Johannsen. Lederer met Johannsen while cross country skiing and was surprised to learn he was 94 years old. Lederer interviewed Johannsen and wrote about him in the hopes of inspiring others to be as adventuresome and robust into their old age.

Marital Choices

Soon after publishing his first book on marriage, co-authored with Don D. Jackson, Lederer began working on a second book on the same topic. His approach to this book appears to be conflicted, at times organizing the content by assignments for couples and at other times organizing it by daily activities. In the end, the content for each approach does not seem to be all that different--both books propose a five-week program for improving relationships--even though the outlines are distinct. Ultimately, both manuscripts, written and revised simultaneously, were published: the first as Martial Choices in 1981 and the second as Creating a Good Relationship, a revised edition of Marital Choices, in 1984. Drafts for the two works are included together so they can be considered as they were written, side-by-side.

Early in the process of research and writing Marital Choices, Lederer consulted Richard Stuart on the book's direction and content. Based on correspondence, it appears that Stuart collaborated closely with Lederer, even contributing text for the book. It is not clear when or how this collaboration ended, but Stuart is not credited as a co-author for either Martial Choices or Creating a Good Relationship.

Mirages of Marriage

Co-authored with Don D. Jackson, Mirages of Marriage was the first of three books Lederer wrote on marriage and relationships. According to the publisher's note, Lederer conceived of the idea to write a book on "a new approach to the problems of marriage" shortly before he met Dr. Jackson. The two exchanged viewpoints on the topic and soon decided to collaborate. By August 1964, Lederer showed his editor, Eric Swenson, at W.W. Norton a rough outline of the book and Swenson was enthusiasitc enough about the project that he urged Jackson to do the same so he could present the proposal to the editorial board.

Although underway by 1964, the bulk of the work took place during 1966-1967. As with all of Lederer's books this one underwent significant editing and re-writing. In fact, in an early letter of interest, Jackson cites Lederer's editorial process as an appeal of the partnership: "I would still like to tie you in with this project in some way, since it would give me the benefit of your editing." The bulk of the collaboraiton took place via mail through an exchange of notes, drafts, and audographs.

Nation of Sheep

Throughout 1959 and 1960, Lederer wrote and revised a manuscript under the working title of "The Unnamed Book" and sometimes refered to as "The Asia Book" as a response to public reactions to The Ugly American (1958). The numerous revised drafts of this manuscript exhibit Lederer's representative writing and editing process. Through 1959 and into 1960, Lederer wrote and revised the book by chapter, keeping the various chapter drafts together with related notes. As such, drafts of chapters are filed under the chapter title used at the time of creation. At other times, when Lederer edited the book as a whole, full drafts of the revised manuscript are filed together.

In 1960, The "Unnamed Book" manuscript transformed with uncharacteristically little documentation into the A Nation of Sheep (1961). By comparing the later versions of The "Unnamed Book" to the final, published version of A Nation of Sheep, it is clear that hundreds of pages and more than a dozen chapters were edited out of the early version, resulting in a less anecdotal, more concise tone in the final published version. At times the final version of chapters retain only the general theme or subject matter of the earlier version, while altering much or all of the language used in previous drafts. Many of the final chapter titles in the published work are very different from the working titles as they appear in earlier drafts of the manuscript.

Our Own Worst Enemy

Lederer revised the text and organiztion of Our Own Worst Enemey a number of times throughout the end of 1967 and the start of 1968. During September and October 1967 each chapter was revised numerous times and the versions were kept together along with related notes. As Lederer began to refine and organize the content of the final manuscript, he kept full versions of the draft as a whole instead of breaking the copy up into individual chapter drafts. Thus drafts of chapters written in 1967 are filed under the chapter title used at the time of creation. Full drafts of the book revised in 1968 are filed together in page order. The final chapter titles in the published work are very differnt from the working titles as they appear in 1967 and part of 1968.

Lederer received much input about the content and organization of the the book, which continued to be revised and refined through early 1968. Correspondence and transcripts of recorded converations with William Sloane of the Rutgers University Press and Eric Swenson of W. W. Norton & Co. shed much light on evolution of the book's content and composition.

Sarkhan

Sarkhan, published in 1965, was Lederer's second collaboration with Eugene Burdick. Correspondence among Lederer, Burdick, and editor Edward Kuhn document the collaboration between the two authors. Chapters were often written and edited separately; chapter drafts have been kept together and are arranged by chapter number.

After the book was published, Lederer faced some difficulties when promoting the book. Various contacts he had in the media told him anonymously that the CIA had ordered the supression of Sarkhan. Lederer made several requests to the CIA for information. He included all of this in a preface for the republished version of the book.

Story of Pink Jade

Described as a universal tale in the book's afterward, Lederer labored over the Story of Pink Jade as he labored over no other book. Always a meticulous editor of his own writing, the editorial process of this work seemed to take on a life of its own. Beginning in 1950, he experimented with several approaches to telling the story, including legend style and verse, before abandoning it in1954. More than a decade later, Lederer returned to the tale determined to complete it. These later drafts include comments by several of Lederer's friends and colleagues as well as numerous re-writes. The book, so different from Lederer's other works, was finally published in 1966. A copy of the published work with heavy annotations in Lederer's hand represents perhaps another version of the tale.

Ugly American

Published in 1958, The Ugly American became Lederer's and co-writer Eugene Burdick's best known book, as well as an American bestseller. While no early drafts or notes are included, there are later typescript drafts of the novel that show thoughtful editing for grammar, sentence structure, and word choice, possibly allowing a glimpse at some of the final edits made before the book was published. Chapters are grouped by their working titles which often, though not always, coincide with the final published chapter titles.
