By the early 1970s, he became a fixture on the national folk music circuit, performing regularly on A Prairie Home Companion, releasing three vinyl albums, and appearing at such legendary venues and coffeehouses across the nation, such as Old Town of Folk Music in Chicago, Caffé Lena in Saratoga Springs, and Passim in Cambridge. Alarik was The Boston Globe's principal folk music writer for 25 years from 1985 to 2010, and contributed regularly to public radio, including seven years as correspondent for the national news show Here and Now, and most recently Folk Tales on WUMB. From 1991-1997, he was editor and principal writer for the New England Folk Almanac. Alarik's first book Deep Community: Adventures in the Modern Folk Underground was published in 2003, while his second book Revival, published in 2011, was a novel set in the modern-day folk scene. Alarik died on December 1, 2021 at the age of 70.

Background on Scott Alarik

Biographical note prepared by Scott Alarik with additions by Michelle Conceison

Scott Alarik was born on January 5, 1951 in Hennepin, Minnesota to parents Carolyn Thacker Alarik and George Hilding Alarik. He became a folksinger after he graduated high school in 1969. He actively opposed the Vietnam War, joining the Resistance Movement while still in high school by publicly refusing to register for the draft. He was convicted of resisting the draft and served 19 months in federal prison. His commitment to thoughtful, mutually-respectful dialogue around national partisan politics continued his entire life.

After his release from prison in 1972, he became a fixture on the national folk music circuit, performing regularly on A Prairie Home Companion, releasing three vinyl albums, and appearing at such legendary venues and coffeehouses across the nation, such as Old Town of Folk Music in Chicago, Caffé Lena in Saratoga Springs, and Passim in Cambridge. A Prairie Home Companion host Garrison Keillor wrote of Alarik, "I have rarely seen an audience in such a good mood as when he’s just been there."

Scott Alarik's love for music and the folk community extended from singing to writing and back again throughout his life.

Alarik was The Boston Globe’s principal folk music writer for 25 years (from 1985 to 2010), and contributed regularly to public radio, including seven years as correspondent for the national news show Here and Now, and most recently Folk Tales on WUMB. He wrote for many national magazines, including Sing Out, Billboard, and Performing Songwriter. From 1991-97, he was editor and principal writer for the New England Folk Almanac. He was the first Boston critic to write about many artists, including Alison Krauss, Ani DiFranco, Crooked Still, Dar Williams, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Shemekia Copeland, Sol y Canto, Catie Curtis, Ellis Paul, and Vance Gilbert.

He was a writer’s writer, beloved by his colleagues as much as by readers and artists he wrote about. Wall Street Journal critic Earle Hitchner called him "one of America's most astute music critics and chroniclers." Lylah Alphonse, who was a copy editor in the Globe’s Living/Arts department when Alarik wrote there, told fellow music writer Jim Sullivan, "I always learned something new and interesting whenever I was lucky enough to get to edit his stories." Music critic Steve Morse wrote, "I've never seen anyone write better about singers. His description of someone's vocal ability would leave me in awe time and time again."

His first book Deep Community: Adventures in the Modern Folk Underground was published in 2003. Deep Community documented the landscape of modern folk music so comprehensively, it prompted the Library Journal to call it "an essential primer to the continuing folk revival."

His second book Revival, published in 2011, was a novel set in the modern-day folk scene. It won the Independent Book Publishers Association’s Benjamin Franklin Silver Award for Popular Fiction, and was embraced by an enthusiastic folk music community, garnering support from folk stars like Tom Paxton, Ellis Paul, Catie Curtis, John Gorka, Alison Brown, Mary Gauthier, and Gordon Bok, who called it "just about the warmest, most nourishing book I’ve read." "Music lifts us up," wrote songwriter, organizer, activist, and author Si Kahn. "So does Revival."

One of his favorite causes was documenting folk history in plain speak, easy to understand and remember, so everyone could participate in the knowledge, legacy and promise of community. He often shared stories to lend context to the whys, hows and what ifs that made things the way they are today. "He had a vision for how things were connected and that is really what made him the cream of the crop. He had an ability to synthesize information in such a way that it led to new revelations and connections. Not everybody can do that," said MarySue Twohy of Sirius XM.

Part of his process was to dive deep and document. Among his many projects in that endeavor were:

  • •Writing scripts and providing voice overs for short films honoring Living, Legacy, and Business recipients of Folk Alliance International's Lifetime Achievement Awards, 2005-2021
  • •Programming Folk Tales on WUMB public radio - a weekly show focused on finding the roots of roots music. Each week, his show and posts he made about them sparked vibrant dialogue with his community on social media. For example, here is the blurb he wrote his September 4, 2021 broadcast: Folk Tales honors blues icon B.B. King, including why he disliked being called King Of the Blues, and the very practical reason he named all his guitars "Lucille." Also, how Harry Belafonte risked his career to record a sweet love song; the difference between bluegrass and old-time music; and the Waltham typewriter repairman who taught bluegrass you don’t have to be from Dixie to pick’n’grin.
  • •Offering workshops and classes with names like "Exploring Folk Music," "The Roots of Songwriting," "Politics and Folk Music," "Folk Music as Fiction," "Robert Burns & Woody Guthrie: Fellow Travelers" and "Finding New Songs in Old Ballads: A Songwriting Workshop"

Scott Alarik died on December 1, 2021 at 70 years old. Pete Seeger called Scott Alarik "one of the best writers in America." His spirit lives on in his creative works - his books, articles, radio programs, videos, voiceovers, and educational materials. He was a lover and maker of folk music and an advocate for folkies everywhere.

Scope of collection

Scott Alarik was involved with the folk music scene in a variety of roles. As an author, folksinger, journalist, radio programmer, advocate, activist, and music community leader, Alarik’s collection includes materials from several aspects of his career, especially writing and interviewing. Arrangement

The collection is arranged into four series: writing, research, personal and ephemera, and audio/visual materials. The audio/visual series is divided into three sub-series by format: miniature cassette tapes, cassette tapes, and CD/DVDs,

Series descriptions

Series consists of notes, printouts and articles on various topics associated with folk music. It appears the research was compiled by Alarik for both teaching and writing purposes. Some of the materials are clearly labeled indicating why the research was conducted (i.e. for a class or workshop) while other materials do not.

This series contains materials written by Alarik including articles, books, and songs. Several copies and drafts of his novels "Revival" and "Rebel Song" are included. Publishing correspondence and marketing materials for his writing are also present. There are also several notepads with informal notes written in them. More drafts and documents relating to his writings can be found in the CD/DVD sub-series of the audiovisual series.

Flyers, event passes, some correspondence, photographs, and buttons mostly created for folk music events and organizations.

Materials consist of a combination of audio interviews, music, writing, notes, and programming that Alarik was involved in or reviewed. Some of his own music is included.

Recorded interviews Alarik conducted for various articles and writing projects. Most cassettes have interviews with multiple people on them, some of which are not identified. Individuals and dates were determined by listening to the tapes, though not all were able to be identified.

Cassettes are mostly recordings of live shows with some interviews, demos and produced cassettes interspersed.

Materials include live and studio recording music as well as radio shows, music videos, and demos. A large portion of CD-roms contain files of Alarik's novel "Revival."
