Background on Lewis Glow
Born in East Pepperell, Mass., on May 1, 1916, the son of Edward and Angela Glow, Lewis Lyman Glow studied chemistry at Massachusetts State College during the latter years of the Great Depression. Only moderately active as a student, Glow took part in the men's debating team and the Wesley Foundation in his freshman year and the chemistry club during his final two years.
After graduating with the class of 1939, Glow continued on to graduate studies in chemistry at Norwich University, but with the start of the Second World War, he joined the Navy, serving on active duty aboard the USS Anthony and USS New Jersey, where he had charge of one of the 16" turrets. Glow was recalled to active duty during the Korean conflict, rising to the rank of Commander in 1956, and was asked to return again during the Vietnam War, though he declined. Glow died in East Pepperell on Sept. 23, 1986.
