Since the merger of the Boston Monthly Meeting with the Independent Cambridge Monthly during the second quarter of the twentieth century, the Society of Friends has expanded in the Boston area.

Fresh Pond Monthly Meeting got its start at a potluck supper at the Friends Meeting in Cambridge in November 1988, when Andrew Towl spurred a his associates to explore establishing a new meeting in the Boston area. The rationale behind the plan ranged from a desire for a smaller group where a sense of community could be built that was difficult to achieve in a meeting as large as Cambridge to the hope of better accommodating intergenerational worship and expanding the theological climate in meeting to include those with more explicitly Christian language.

The group gathered for worship for the first time on Jan. 1, 1989, was accepted as an allowed meeting under Cambridge Monthly shortly thereafter, and was set off as a monthly meeting of its own in 1991. It has been under care of Salem Quarterly Meeting since its inception.
