Founded in 1895, the Girls Club of Greenfield provides high quality early care and educational services to the girls of Franklin County, Massachusetts, and advocates for the rights of children and their families. During the school year, the Club offers diverse programming, ranging from an infant room and preschool to after school activities that promote teamwork, community spirit, social skills, and confidence. Since 1958, they have also operated a summer camp, Lion Knoll, in Leyden

Background on Girls Club of Greenfield

Founded in 1895, the Girls Club of Greenfield provides high quality early care and educational services to the girls of Franklin County, Massachusetts, and advocates for the rights of children and their families. During the school year, the Club offers diverse programming, ranging from day care and preschool to after school activities that promote teamwork, community spirit, social skills, and confidence. Since 1958, they have also operated a summer camp, Lion Knoll, in Leyden.

Scope of collection

This collection documents nearly one century in the life of the Girls Club of Greenfield, from the organization's founding in 1895 through the early 1990s. The bulk of the material dates from the 1940s through the 1970s, though there are records from both the earliest and the more recent days of the Girls Club. Materials include annual reports, meeting minutes, financial materials, and correspondence both incoming and outgoing, formal and informal. Additional types of materials include record books such as ledgers, account books and registration books; program records; scrapbooks; newspaper clippings; photographs; slides; artifacts.

Broadly, this collection documents the workings of a girls club in a medium-sized community over the decades of the twentieth century. It conveys a sense of the administrative workings of the club, and the sorts of activities undertaken by both its leaders and its members, from annual meetings to summer camp, Founder's Weeks to Christmas pageants. One can also derive, through the club's association with outside organizations, a sense of its place in the community. These papers convey, with evocative clarity, the role of an organization whose avowed mission is to "promote character development of girls through a program of cultural, vocational and recreational activities, which will assist them to become better citizens, mothers and homemakers."

Arrangement

This collection is organized into three series:

Series descriptions

Series 1. Administrative and Operational
1899-1995

Records of the administrative and operational aspects of the Greenfield Girls Club, including brief histories, meeting minutes, reports from the club's Board of Directors, and membership lists. Correspondence is here, as are general calendars and policies. Financial materials, including general records in the form of ledgers and cash books, as well as bills and receipts from specific vendors, are included. Finally, there are materials chronicling the day-to-day life of the club, including applications, registration books, attendance records, newsletters, calendars, announcements & information regarding various activities, news clippings, and memorabilia.

Series 2. Photographs
1931-1991

Photographs and slides of the club. There are hundreds of pictures and slides, ranging from shots of summer camp and Christmas celebrations to photos of performances, classes, and individual activities. The vast majority of these are unidentified, although about half of those that can be dated fall between 1931 and 1991. There are also several unidentified film reels and a videotape from 1982 of a television appearance by Greenfield Girls Club officials.

Series 3. Programs
1947-1990

Groups and programs associated with the Greenfield Girls Club. The club has been involved in running a nursery school, a day care program, and a summer camp (Camp Lion Knoll). Records of these programs include correspondence with parents, applications, attendance records and financial materials. Proposals for extension and outreach programs in neighboring towns are here. Working Tools for the 80swas an employment placement service run by G.G.C., and the collection contains materials regarding its establishment and development in the late 1970s as well as various associated workshop, publicity, and management materials. Materials pertaining to related organizations such as United Way, other girls clubs and Greenfield Community College are included. Finally, material from the Girls Clubs of America includes records of various annual national meetings of the G.C.A., correspondence, publications, reports, and regional materials.
