Background on Massachusetts AFL-CIO

The Massachusetts AFL-CIO began as the state branch of the American Federation of Labor in 1887. They merged with the Massachusetts State Congress of Industrial Organizations at their 1958 convention to form the Massachusetts AFL-CIO. Its purpose was to organize workers, advance the interests of workers through organization and legislation, and to provide general assistance in the event of difficulties such as strikes and lockouts.

Scope of collection

Records in this accretion, acquired from Robert Haynes in 2009, consist of correspondence, articles, reports, memorandum, minutes, press releases, notes, statements, flyers, newsletters, and publications. Non-textual material includes audio and video cassette tapes, photographs, and a small amount of realia. The records span the years 1908-2009, although the majority is concentrated within the years 1995-2008. A considerable factor in the bulk of the materials from this period is the introduction of electronic mail as the primary means of communication for the organization. Print copies of email correspondence is found throughout the collection.

The administrative section of this accretion (Series 1, Subseries A-Q) is the largest; it includes Executive Board and Council information, Presidential and Secretary-Treasurer files, subject files, reports, material from the national office, legislative material, books, publications and several folders devoted to state and national election campaigns. The material reflects the union's efforts to reform Health Care, institute living wage legislation, fight privatization, and institute job training. The charitable activities of the Massachusetts AFL-CIO, such as the annual High School Scholarship Program and Walk to Cure Cancer (Series 1, Subseries H and Series 1, Subseries M), also are represented in this accretion.

While the collection includes material from 1908-2009, material prior to the 1980s is scarce. There are traces of material from the Presidencies of Arthur Osborne and Joseph Faherty, but the 1998-2008 tenure of Bob Haynes makes up the bulk of this accretion. Four Secretary-Treasurers are also represented, including Kathleen Casavant, who in 1998 was the first woman to be elected to that position. There is material on her subsequent resignation and settlement in 2006.

The political arm of the Massachusetts AFL-CIO is represented in extensive material on state legislation and campaigns including articles, letters to state politicians, roll calls, ballot questions, candidate forums, endorsements, and copies of bills. Federal campaigns also figures prominently in several folders devoted to the Presidential Elections of 1992, 2000, 2004 and 2008. (Series 1, Subseries I.)

Material on the New Unity Partnership/Change to Win SEIU disaffiliation campaign of 2004-2006 is well represented in this accretion. The financial impact of disaffiliation on the Massachusetts AFL-CIO is reflected in much of the material from this period. (See Series 1, Subseries M)

With a few minor exceptions, the records were received from the office of the Massachusetts AFL-CIO with little or no discernible arrangement. While file headings were maintained where possible, the arrangement of this collection was primarily created by the processors. Series 1 reflects the hierarchical structure of the organization and is arranged chronologically and alphabetically within each subseries. Series 2, 3, and 4 are arranged chronologically and alphabetically within each subseries, while Series 5 retains the hierarchical structure of Series 1. Any non-textual and oversized material found in the collection was removed from the normal series locations, and moved to Series 5.

The series and subseries mimic earlier organizations of the collection and are as follows:
