Background on Stephen Driscoll
The Hon. Stephen P. Driscoll, UMass 1973, 1975 MEd, was born in Quincy, Massachusetts in 1950. In addition to his distinctive career in the performing arts and professional wrestling, Driscoll has had a lifelong fascination with American government and politics and been politically active since childhood - he remembers holding signs for Adlai Stevenson’s 1956 presidential run. This devotion prompted Driscoll to co-found the National Stonewall Democrats, become a delegate to national conventions and a member of the Executive Committee of the Massachusetts Democratic Party.
Assembled over many decades, Driscoll’s massive collection of political ephemera reflects his keen eye and broad interests, and encompasses every era in American government and politics, both state and federal, from George Washington to Joe Biden. Included in his collection are thousands of items and artifacts—including buttons, posters, flyers, pennants, sculpture, clothing, electronics, audio-visual items, toys, trinkets of all kinds, and much, much more—which offer tantalizing glimpses into American history, society, and material culture.
Scope of collection
Stephen Driscoll has been politically active and an avid collector throughout his entire multi-faceted life. As a consequence, his collection of political ephemera comprises thousands of items and artifacts capturing every aspect of politics and government from the founding of the American Republic to 2022.
Of particular interest to Driscoll were politicians – including Presidents, Presidential “Also Rans,” statesmen, the Founding Fathers, and Women in Politics & Government – and issues of national concern including the anti-death penalty movement; the VietNam War; LGBTQ+ rights.
Included among this vast collection are Banners, Flags, and Pennants; Buttons,Pins,Patches, and Jewelry; Clothing, Accessories, and Sundries; Comestible/perishable souvenirs; Electronics; Glass souvenirs; Home Decor souvenirs; a wide assortment of Metal, Paper, Plastic, and Wood souvenirs; Posters, Prints, and Signs, both framed and unframed; Printed material; Sculptural pieces; Tableware and Utensils; Toys; Visual/Audio/Audio-visual items; and other assorted collectibles.
Among the collection items of note are busts of several of the Founding Fathers; an assortment of Henry Clay collectibles from the 1830s; companion cartes-de-visite of Abraham Lincoln and John Wilkes Booth from the 1860s; an In Memoriam for William McKinley (1901); cabinet cards and postcards of William Howard Taft (c.1910); a framed poster - Woodrow Wilson welcoming home the veterans of WWI - c.1918; a Franklin D. Roosevelt “New Deal Clock” from the 1930s; an FDR Bakelite cigarette box (c.1940); Commemorative bisque dolls of Dwight and Mamie Eisenhower from the 1957 Inaugural Ball; a Jackie Kennedy “Jackie” Ponytail carrying case (c.1961); many George McGovern posters and buttons from the 1970s; buttons and posters featuring Geraldine Ferraro as Walter Mondale’s 1984 running mate; an invitation to Bill Clinton’s Inaugural Ceremonies in 1993; a free standing cardboard figure of George W. Bush from the early 2000s; numerous buttons - framed and loose; pro and con - of Barack Obama (c.2010); a Donald Trump voodoo doll (c. 2015); Pete Buttigieg buttons (c.2020); bobblehead dolls dating from the 1950s to the 2020s; and a huge assortment of John F.
